Michele S. Riley, Esq.

In her role as a mediator, arbitrator, dispute resolution counselor and trainer, Michele Riley employs the core philosophy of the Negotiaton Institute, Everybody Wins® in a successful negotiation.  She uses her talents to show how to bring about resolutions that benefit all the participants in a negotiation.  She shows how to create the atmosphere of good will that makes future agreements a likely probability.

Ms. Riley serves as a court-approved mediator and arbitrator for the New York state and federal courts, handling disputes in the areas of commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, employment law, corporate governance and general corporate law.  She also arbitrates disputes for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the National Arbitration Forum.

By teaching courses on negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution at the International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution at Columbia University, Ms. Riley complements and applies recent scholarship to her mediation and arbitration practice.  She has given presentations at professional conferences, most recently in June 2008 at the Asian Pacific Mediation Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and has been invited to speak at the Annual Conference of the American Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section in New York City in April 2009.

Ms Riley has had broad legal experience as a corporate attorney.  She has held the position of General Counsel at a U. S. subsidiary of a major Japanese automotive manufacturer and, in that capacity, was responsible for the legal affairs of the subsidiary and advised senior management of the Japanese parent company on questions of U.S. law.

Prior to that position, Ms. Riley was associated with law firms in New York City and Tokyo, Japan, where she gained extensive experience in cross-border business transactions.  Representative transactions include the project financing of an oil exploration project in Bohai Bay, China, the creation of a joint venture between Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in the U.S., and the leveraged buyout of an iconic American brand by a group of investors from the Middle East.  Domestic U.S. transactions include the leveraged buyout of a National Football League franchise

Ms. Riley is a member of the American Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section and the Association of Conflict Resolution (ACR).  She is currently the co-chair of the Commercial Section of the ACR.  Her professional memberships also include those in the Arbitration Committee of the United States Council for International Business and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York where she works on the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee to further the adoption of mediation and arbitration as effective means of conflict resolution.

She has not only presented The Art of Negotiating® seminar for us but has also specialized in our other programs: Labor-Management, Mergers & Acquisitions, Mediation, How to Read a Person Like a Book (Body Language), Meta-Talk (Hidden Meaning of Conversation), and Women and the Art of Negotiating by customizing these programs to our customer’s needs.
